Mother’s Day in Somerset sorted!

12 Mar 2017

Everywhere gets so darn booked up for Mothering Sunday – as you’ll know, if you’ve ever spent the day before desperately trying to nab a restaurant reservation only to find it’s Burger King or bust. So in the interests of being super-organized, we’ve decided to get in there early this year with our guide to what to do with your mother – or your children – on Sunday 26 March (I can think of a few suggestions that aren’t quite in keeping with the spirit of the day, but let’s leave that there).

Muddy eats: The Duck at Burtle

23 Feb 2017

Driving across the Levels this week I saw a sign to a village called Burtle and the name rang a bell. A quick Google (in a lay by, of course) revealed the reason why – it’s where you’ll find one of Somerset’s newest gastropubs. Now I’m always looking for an excuse to stop and fill my face, so I went to investigate…

16 Feb 2017

Did you know that not one but three Somerset pubs made it into this year’s Top 50 Gastropubs Awards? Muddy eats at the – new – Sam’s Kitchen Deli in Frome

It’s open from 8am for breakfast but I’m always in the gym first thing *coughs*, so a friend and I decided on lunch…

Restaurant review: the award-winning Clavelshay Barn

16 Nov 2016

The last time I was at Clavelshay Barn in North Petherton, not far from Taunton, it was me doing the cooking (on one of their excellent cookery courses).  I thought I’d hand back the oven gloves to head chef Olivier Certain when I went back last week – after all, the restaurant’s recently scooped up loads of awards, including three Taste of the West Awards:  a Gold, the Best South West Restaurant and the overall No 1 Place to Go trophy.

The Muddies eat out in Weston-super-Mare

6 Nov 2016

Over the half term, the Muddies and I made a deal. We would all go to Weston-super-Mare and I would endure an hour of hell amongst the amusements on the pier if we all went for a bracing walk on the flat, flat sands. I didn’t know of any good places to eat round in Weston (if you do, let me know!) but then I discovered the newly opened Bistrot Pierre.

Muddy eats: Sunday lunch at The White Horse, Haselbury Plucknett

19 Aug 2016

What’s your favourite Sunday roast? Beef? Pork? Chicken? I can never decide, so when a friend told me about the Sunday Sharing Board – where you can have it all – at the Michelin Guide listed The White Horse,  I immediately booked a table for Sunday lunch.

The White Horse is a 17th century coaching inn in the village of Haselbury Plucknett, close to Crewkerne in south Somerset.
