Joe Orton completed his famous, subversive, farce only weeks before he was murdered by his lover Kenneth Halliwell in 1967 at the age of 34 and he actually never saw the play performed. Considered totally shocking when it was first staged in 1969, it tells the tale of Dr Prentice (Rufus Hound),  a sex-obsessed psychiatrist in a private clinic, who’s attempting to interview and seduce a prospective secretary when his nymphomaniac wife, an over eager hospital inspector and a dim-witted policeman turn up.

The Foodie Bugle, Bath

Now I love a bit of louche luxe but there’s something about simply designed, useful things that I just can’t resist – and The Foodie Bugle, just around the corner from the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey on Abbey Green, is filled with them. It’s a cornucopia of home wares, contemporary and vintage – everything from a ball of string to a beautifully upholstered armchair – and interesting artisan foods and drink.

Muddy is no stranger to the joys of a good bottle of wine, and the more I meet independent wine producers the more I fall in love with their ethos. They can advise you better and most importantly, they’re surprisingly competitive on price when it comes to quality, because they’ve learned the hard way that they have to compete with the supermarkets to survive. So I asked Andrew Kinnersley of The Grape and the Good in Wells for some advice on matching wines for Christmas Day lunch.
