Mini Muddy makeover

With the internet filled with all sorts of dodgy info (charcoal and GLUE facemasks - really?!) it's vital for teens to get the right skincare advice

My Muddy teen’s become obsessed with her skin. Constantly scrutinising for any signs of imperfection, spending hours slathering on lard-like Sudocrem (yep, the stuff for babies’ bottoms) or mashed up avocados and sleeping with half a King Edward over each eye. All harmless enough but when I found her watching a YouTuber demonstrating how to make a face mask out of charcoal and glue – yes, glue – I decided it was time for a visit to the lovely ladies up at The Barn to get some advice on how to care for her skin – properly.

As well as offering a range of gorgeous skincare and pampering beauty treatments for women (and men), I discovered that they also have mini facials, eyebrow shapes, mini makeovers, pedicures, manicures, etc, and free skincare consultations for teenagers.

The Mudlet was thrilled to visit The Barn (it’s a big step up from our bathroom) and slightly nervous about meeting therapist Briony for the consultation. Briony’s calm and gentle manner immediately put her at ease and soon they were chatting about her skin and any skin concerns, how it felt after washing, where any breakouts occur. Briony sure covered a lot of ground in the course of the conversation: the negative effects of stress and blue light from phones and the benefits of a good night’ sleep (take note young lady) as well as how to look after the skin with a simple skincare routine. And the Mudlet soaked it all up (never listens to me). Then out came the magnifying glass for closer examination.

Next came the mini facial,  pre-cleansing to lift away dirt and grime (can’t believe there was any to lift away, my girl washes her face so frequently); then a second cleanse….She’s liking this! They use Clear Start products, a gentle skincare system aimed at teens developed by Dermalogica but Briony explained what to look for and what to avoid when you’re buying skincare products generally.

Then next door for the mini makeover, box of tricks at the ready…

The Mudlet isn’t really into full slap yet and so the makeover from glam expert Olivia, even though it was subtle, was probably more than she would usually go for. A light foundation and bronzer, a touch of blusher (all Mii cosmetics), applied with a huge soft brush –  was almost as relaxing as the facial.

Mascara to open up the eyes and a dab of lip gloss. And that’s it. Ta-daaaaa! She looked awesome and felt really special at her morning at The Barn. Put her in a good mood all day – thanks ladies!

You can buy the Clear Start range in The Barn. This nifty little kit (£26) had everything needed to deal with breakouts: foaming wash, toner, day time treatment oil, moisturiser and overnight clearing treatment and the Mudlet’s been using it ever since our visit.

The atmosphere was so peaceful, and the people there were really nice. The facial was soooo relaxing and I loved the way The Barn was decorated – I want my room to look like The Barn! Thanks for giving me so many cool tips.

Prices: mini facial, mini facial, mini manicure and mini pedicure are each £25. Mini facial and eyebrow shape £30 (eyebrow shape alone £12. Back, head and shoulders treat £30. Waxing from £10. Ear piercing £15. The range of eight Clear Start products start at £13. Skin consultations are free.
