Oh yes it is! Cinderella at the Bristol Hippodrome
Just back from the Bristol Hippodrome’s very sparkly Christmas panto and onto my computer to give you the Muddy verdict on Cinderella starring Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. I’ll be brief (because I’m knackered): I think you’ll love it.
Cinders (Rhiannon Chesterman) and Prince Charming (Blair Gibson) are suitably good looking and in fine voice as they belt out songs and fall in lurve; Ugly Sisters Wasabi and Saffron (Tim Hudson and Charles Brunton) are mean to Cinders with some bitingly funny lines and fabulously OTT costumes…
…and where cheeky chappy Buttons played by the aptly named Jarred Christmas had the energy to keep up his patter with the audience, I have no idea.
The stars of the show really are Torvill and Dean, who play Cinderella’s fairy godparents Queen Juniper and King Crispin. Obviously the skating – wearing cleverly designed online skates that at first glance look like the real thing – is good but the acting, especially by Dean, isn’t half bad either (we’re talking panto, not the Royal Shakespeare Company here) and when they’re on stage, it really does feel magical. And yes, they do perform Bolero.
The sets are magnificent (if a little Disney), giant glitter balls throw sparkles all round the auditorium, snow falls on the audience, they sing Pineapple Pen and there are real Shetland ponies – what more do you want?
Cinderella is on at The Hippodrome until Sun 8 Jan with two performances a day.
