Your Muddy Guide: Thurs 8-Weds 14 Sept
Music in the Meadow, Secret World Animal Rescue, East Huntspill, Sat 10 Sept, from 12 noon
People usually visit the Secret World Animal Rescue to get close to little furry creatures. This weekend they’ll be coming to a meadow at East Huntspill to see legendary rocker Steve Harley (quite furry) and the Cockney Rebels and the awesome Toyah Willcox (not at all furry, and we should know, Muddy met her recently) – plus a whole load of other local bands.
Field Studies: Near Gone, Hauser & Wirth, Bruton, Sun 11 Sept, 7pm
It’s all happening in meadows this weekend. Over at Hauser & Wirth, the touring theatre production Near Gone is being performed in Oudolf Field’s Radić Pavilion (the Serpentine Gallery’s 2014 Pavilion, a cross between an alien spaceship and a potato, I love it). Two performers, speaking in English and Bulgarian and with a supporting cast of 400 fresh flowers, tell a story inspired by a personal story of a near death experience.
Frome Farmer’s Market, Market Yard, Frome, Sat 10 Sept, 9am-1pm
Come and browse one of the largest standalone farmers’ markets in the South West which takes place in the Cheese & Grain Hall, BA11 1BE. It takes place on the second Saturday of every month.
Heritage Open Days, across Somerset (and beyond), Thurs 8-Sun 11 Sept
Your chance to nose around and behind the scenes some of Somerset’s hidden, privately-owned and little known historic, cultural and architecturally interesting places and monuments: 68 of them will open their doors from today until Sunday as part of the UK-wide Heritage Open Days. From Art Deco cinemas to Jewish burial grounds. You can search for places and events near you by town, postcode or on a map.
Ghost: the musical, Bristol Hippodrome, Bristol, Mon 12-Sat 17 Sept
Walking back to their apartment one night, Sam is murdered, leaving girlfriend Molly alone and utterly lost…until a phony psychic turns up and helps them reconnect over a potter’s wheel (cue music and hankies).
Haynes Breakfast Club, Haynes International Motor Museum, Sparkford, Sun 11 Sept, from 9am
This Sunday, people with very impressive cars can drive over and show them off in front of the Haynes Motor Museum while the rest of us stroll around, admire and munch on a bacon roll. The Breakfast Club usually runs the first Sunday of the month.
Floral Art Show, The Bishop’s Palace, Wells, Fri 9-Sun 11 Sept
My idea of flower arranging is get flowers, get vase and mash. Not so the 40 flower clubs of the NAFAS South West. Pick up some tips in Wells this weekend when the rooms of the medieval palace, upstairs and down, will be filled with stunning floral arrays. There are stalls to browse and ‘fun floral workshops’ if you’re dragging the kids along too.
