Kingsdon Inn, Kingsdon

Muddy says: Chocolate box 17th century thatched pub with a menu inspired by English comfort food and southern Italian cuisine – wild boar bolognaise, anyone?

The Kingsdon Inn – all beams, whitewashed walls and flagstone floors – in the pretty village of Kingsdon, near Somerton is the local pub but you won’t find chicken in a basket on the menu here.

Owners Cornish-born manager/chef Adam and Italian wife Cinzia serve up dishes inspired by English comfort food and southern Italy.  So you’ll see Tuscan-style braised hake and paella alongside the pigeon, West Country roasted lamb and braised pork. Desserts are timeless classics;  the cheese board is award-winning British and local. Children can choose smaller portions off the main menus and specials board – the Muddies love this place.

And the booze ? It used to be a cider house but today you can sup local ales and ciders, beers from Somerset’s Butcombe Brewery and  a selection of interesting wines.

Cosy up inside, in a little nook with a bread oven, by the open fire or sit outside in the gardens out front.  Overlooking the large village green, kids can kick around a football or play on swings, ship climbing frame and zip wire while you finish your pud and have another glass.

Their popular Monday Dining Club is inspired. Where else are you going to eat the likes of wild boar bolognaise and courgette and goat’s cheese frittata on a Monday night in Somerset?  Excellent value at £14 for two courses and £18 for three (booking essential).

Up the wooden stairs to bedfordshire – sorry, Somerset – where there are three trad ensuite bedrooms. The next morning, you’ll enjoy home-cooked breakfasts, bread and jam before exploring the Somerset and Dorset countryside or heading off home (it’s about 10 mins away from the main London–West Country A303).
