The White Post, Rimpton

Muddy says: relaxed dining at one of the UK’s Top 50 Gastropubs, with panoramic views over the beautiful Somerset and Dorset countryside

fine dining with salad, flowers, tube of paste

A bit off the beaten track, down a lane near the village of Rimpton about 4-6 miles from both Yeovil and Sherborne, The White Post was once just a local pub. Now more of a restaurant with a bar (though it’s still the local), it famously sits across two counties, so you could find yourself eating or having a drink in Somerset while your companion does the same but in Dorset.  The food is imaginative,  beautifully presented and delicious – you don’t get voted Best Restaurant in the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2017 or one of the UK’s Top 50 Gastropubs 2017 for nothing. The vibe is relaxed and unassuming but the panoramic views can be spectacular, especially at sunset.

Chef Bret Sutton, a seven times finalist in the Roux Scholarship competition, is passionate about local foods and ingredients (blackboards on the wall credit their suppliers). Wife Kelly handles front of house but chances are you’ll meet Brett, too, as he likes to shoot the breeze.

Open for lunch and dinner Tuesdays to Saturdays – modern British a la carte and Brett’s take on pub classics, plus a 10-course tasting menu at dinner. Or try the Sunday’s stupendous sharing board with five or six different roasted meats and all the trimmings.  Simply furnished rooms await overnight guests.
