Brunchtime booze

A cross between soup and snifter, the Bloody Mary is the perfect brunchtime booze (tho' it might be pushing it to say it gives you one of your 5-day). And I've got just what you need to make it...

A Bloody Mary is just about the only cocktail (apart from a Buck’s Fizz ) that I’d admit to knocking back at breakfast – I mean, brunch.  In fact, it’s the perfect brunchtime booze. The combo of healthy tomato juice with that invigorating kick tastes delicious, feels like it’s actually good for you (it’s practically food isn’t it?!) and might even help in the unlikely *ahem* event of a hangover.

The cocktail is said to have been invented in the 1920s by Fernand Petiot, bartender at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. He combined vodka brought by emigres fleeing the Russian Revolution with American canned tomato juice, to create the delightfully named ‘Bucket of Blood’.

When Petiot returned to the St Regis Hotel in New York in the 1930s, the cocktail caught on, especially as a hangover cure. At some point,  bars started calling it a Bloody Mary, either after the Catholic Mary Tudor who topped a lot of Protestants or maybe after someone’s girlfriend (take your pick) and the name stuck.

Since then there have been many variations on the basic vodka/tomato juice combo, each with varying degrees of spice and kick.  One of the best I’ve come across is Godminster Farm’s Bloody Good Mary – they don’t just make excellent cheese, you know. Their vodka spirit is hand-infused with sinus-clearing horseradish and their spiced and seasoned Bloody Mary mixers are made with super flavoursome tomatoes from the Isle of Wight Tomato Company. It all adds up to a Bloody Good Mary with real ka-boom. And you don’t need a bartender to make it for you.

Grab some tall glasses, add ice cubes, pour in a couple of fingers of vodka (it’s up to you how much) and top up with spicy tomato juice.  Garnish with a wedge of lemon or lime and a celery stick to stir – or whatever else you feel like adding: a couple of king prawns, crispy bacon, olives …

And can a Bloody Mary really cure your hangover? Possibly. While the hair of the dog vodka might help you forget your suffering, the tomatoes contain water and electrolytes which help rehydration, antioxidant vitamin C, lycopene and vitamin B6 which has been shown to reduce hangover symptoms.
