The Vintage Bazaar, Cheese & Grain, Frome, Sat 16 April

Gone sketching drawing group, Leigh Woods, Bristol, from Tues 19 April


An eight-week drawing group Gone Sketching starts Tuesday 19 April at the National Trust’s Leigh Woods, located on the edge of Bristol. The views of the famous suspension bridge, spring flowers, bluebells, majestic trees and a small herd of North Devon cattle grazing the Iron Age ramparts of Stokeleigh Hill Fort should inspire. There are led activities and free drawing in different locations culminating in a pop-up exhibition on July 24.

Richard Chappell Dance - Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre TauntonThe triple bill at the Tacchi-Morris Arts CentreIRIS analyses adolescent experiences of London’s club culture (might ring a few bells?) and nyctophobia (fear of the dark); The Vast Rocks moves from the city to the landscape of the south west; and Burnt Norton uses T.S Eliot’s poem of the same name to explore the idea of getting lost within oneself. By the way, did you know that the second of Eliot’s Four Quartets was called East Coker and that his ashes are interred at the church in the south Somerset village?

Somerset Stages Rally, Minehead & Exmoor, Sat 16 April

130 of the UK’s best rally cars and crews in 1970s classics, army Landrovers and the latest modified rally cars will be racing across 40 miles of gravel trails on the Exmoor National Park and around the surrounding area in the Somerset Stages 2016 on Saturday. You can watch the action, with live commentary and refreshments, from the designated Kennisham Forest Stage.

First run at Kennisham 9.25am; second run 1.38pm. £10/car.

Stained glass workshops, Bishop’s Palace, Wells, from Weds 20 April

stained-glass-window-941355_1920I’ve always fancied having a go at this. You can learn how to cut, solder, design and construct a panel of traditional stained glass at the Bishop’s Palace. The class is taught by the highly experienced (29 years, doncha know) Richard Pelham from Glastonbury Stained Glass. Check out the new steel sculpture by Fiona Campbell while you’re there – it was only unveiled last week.

Children’s Day, Wincanton Racecourse, Sun 17 April

Come and meet the Gruffalo at Wincanton Racecourse this weekend. You can also watch the South West Mascot Grand National, where mascots representing various charities will run a special course incorporating three fences made from recycled birch taken from Aintree Crabbie’s Grand National course, a tug of war, Pony Club displays, a bouncy castle, animal petting and glitter tattoos….Oh, and there will be some proper horse racing, too.
