Somerset ice skating

A double two loop of this year's best pop-up ice rinks in Somerset and beyond – with family skate tickets to win!

We’re talking proper ice here, not the synthetic stuff, in our guide to the best pop-up ice rinks in Somerset and beyond. And we’re giving away two sets of family tickets (with hot chocolate afterwards) to one of them. So dust off those tan tights and start lacing up your skates …

We the Curious Ice Rink, Millennium Square, Bristol,  Sat Nov 18– Tues 16 Jan

Photo Joe Meredith

Skating every day with disco sessions in the evenings and special morning sessions for under the 8s, or glide around with a movie (Frozen Singalong, Happy Feet, etc) on the Big Screen in the background. As well as the rink, there’s an Après Bar, Skyview wheel and a bunch of   Millenium Square Winter Fair chalet stalls. Sessions are a bit cheaper if you book online.

Bath on Ice, Royal Victoria Park, Bath, Fri 17 Nov – Tues 2 Jan

Outdoor ice skating – and glow in the dark mini golf – in the centre of Bath. Take the weight off your skates in the Moguls Alpine bar and cafe and have a hot choc or scoff pizzas and fries (not chips, you notice).

Icescape@The Tropicana,  Weston super Mare, Fri 3 Nov–Sun 7 Jan

Slip slide your way over to what they say is the largest covered Winter ice rink in the country (up to 500 skaters at one time). As well as the slippery stuff there’s a giant snow slide, a couple of fair ground rides and, oooh, an Igloo Bar.

Winterwonderland, Cribbs Causeway, Thurs 16 Nov– Sun 7 Jan

Another biggie, at over 1,000 sq m the South West’s largest outdoor rink, plus Enchanted Castle, stalls, a train inside the Mall – and of course, all those shops.

Cardiff Winter Wonderland, Cardiff,  Thurs 9 Nov–Sun 7 Jan

Scoot around on an ice rink under a huge clear roof, then refuel on gluhwein, wurst and pancakes.  Leave it a few minutes…then head for all the fun of the fair.

Skate at Somerset House with Fortnum & Mason, London, Nov 15 – 14 Jan

Skate at Somerset House is tying-up with Fortnum & Mason again to give us a Christmas shopping arcade and foodie treats in an Alpine-themed lodge where you can share cheese or chocolate fondues. Skate Lates music nights include takeovers from the 90s and Noughties hip hop and R&B night Supa Dupa Fly. There’s a skate school for children – and adults.

National History Museum, London, 26 Oct – 7 Jan

Combine a visit to the dinos or the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition (on till 28 May) with a turn on the ice at this Kensington rink.

Hampton Court Palace, Moseley, Surrey 24 Nov – 7 Jan

‘Skate back in time’ they say and you’ve a seriously stunning backdrop for your triple salchow at Henry VIII’s old gaff in Surrey, floodlit with colours for the evening. The cafe serves up pies, rum punches and fizz. Make a day of it in the palace itself.

We’ve got TWO family tickets to give away to the fab Bath On Ice rink. Each family ticket (worth £45) is for two adults and two children or one adult and three children, and includes skate hire and a one-hour session on the ice, which must be booked in advance and subject to availability at the time of booking – and hot chocolate for everyone afterwards.

All you have to do is LIKE and SHARE Somerset Muddy Stilettos’ Facebook page and write ICE in the comments box.  Easy peasy. Two names will be pulled out of my bobble hat on Thurs 30 Nov.
