Centre for Young Musicians Taunton
Muddy says: one of the world’s top music and drama school’s has an outpost in Somerset – and you don’t have to be a child prodigy to go there
Believe it or not, London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, one of the world’s top music conservatoires, has an outpost right here in Somerset.
The Centre for Young Musicians Taunton (CYMT) is a Saturday morning music school for children and young people aged 5–18 of every level of ability, including complete beginners.
Of course they offer a wide range of 1:1 tuition on just about every musical instrument you can name – from violin and double bass through to saxophone and harp – and singing lessons too. But there’s more to the CYMT than that. There are lessons in aural training, general musicianship, the history of music, composition and theory of music. Students can play together, in a range of genres, in small ensembles and the CYMT orchestra and build up the confidence to perform. Above all, it’s about having fun with other musically-minded kids.
Based at Richard Huish College, mornings run from 8.30–1.45 with each student having their own personalised timetable. Fees work out to as little as £6 an hour, paid termly, although burseries are available.
Let the music commence!
