West Country Water Buffalo
Muddy says: Yeovil’s the last place you’d expect to find water buffalo but their meat, milk, mozzarella and ice cream (yes!) are delicious and healthy
Descended from the Asian water buffalo, these gentle giants happily munch away on fresh grass in the fields of a farm just outside Yeovil. When it’s wet, they even like a wallow!
Have you ever tried buffalo meat before? I bought it at our local farmer’s market recently and we loved it. Dark in colour and with white fat, it’s a succulent and flavoursome beef. Leaner and with less cholesterol than traditional beef, it’s actually a healthier option.
West Country Water Buffalo meat is hung and matured for 2-3 weeks before their butcher produces fillet, sirloin and rump steaks, roasting joints, mince and faggots – as well as sausages and various burgers. The burgers are ace.
It’s not just beef – you can milk a water buffalo! Buffalo milk is higher in calcium, protein and butterfat (but lower in cholesterol) than cow’s milk – and tastes sublime. They’ve won a whole heap of awards from Taste of the West and The Great Taste Awards and won Best Local Food & Drink Producer in the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2017.
You’ll find West Country Water Buffalo at farmer’s markets all around the south west – in Axbridge, Crewkerne, Frome, Martock, Montacute, Poundbury and Sherborne – or just pop into their farm shop, near the village of Chilthorne Dormer, on the A37 between Ilchester and Yeovil.
Opening hours: Mon to Fri 9am–6.30pm; Sat 9am–6.30pm; Sun 10am–2pm (though as it’s a working farm, you might want to give them a buzz beforehand to doublecheck).
