Light bulb moment

I’ve had bare bulbs rather than what I’d consider a naff lampshade – it’s not easy to find cool lights in the countryside, and they’re not something I’d buy online (you’ve got to see the light on, haven’t you?). So I was really excited to discover the fabulous Fiat Lux in Frome. Fiat lux is Latin for ‘let there be light’ (but of course you knew that) and at night the shop looks beautiful.

I went back in the day to have a good look around and met owners Nick  and Lesley who’ve been running the shop on Bath Street in Frome since 2003.

There are lights hanging from the ceiling, on the walls, on the floor and on tables and shelves, both upstairs and down – they’ve gotta lotta, lotta lights.

They stock an eclectic mix of both traditional and contemporary styles with something for every room, style and taste, from traditional map wall lights (those brass ones that shine a little light on your pix) to the latest (yes, even in Somerset) contemporary lights like the new metallic lights, element lights and this utilitarian but glamourous tripod standard lamp with a ‘fresnal’ lighthouse lens.

They’re big on colour…

…which Nick puts down to down to the fact that he grew up in the 70s with an architect father who was besotted with lime green and orange, owning an orange Lotus Super 7 and even a bright orange Murphy TV.

There’s lots to discover, from the utilitarian to the frou frou…froufrou

… this clever little lamp …

…rubber and metal desk lights which bend every which way …

.. and these Magritte-inspired light shades called Jeeves (the bowler hat) and Wooster (the top hat), which are also available as desk lamps.

Jeeves £197; Wooster £206

There’s a room devoted to outdoor lighting: this little galvanised aluminium lantern, which you could hang from a branch or pergola or put on a garden table, caught my eye…

Prices range from a crinkle light shade for £15 up to this bone china drop pendant light at £1,219.

Not only do they have a brilliant selection of light and shades but they really know their stuff (Nick’s been in the lighting business for 35 years), so there was a constant stream of people coming into the shop, to ask for advice and inspiration before buying. Nick and Lesley have loads of ideas for combining different elements, with thick catalogues behind the counter with thousands (and thousands) more lights, and back copies of Elle Deco and the like to take away.

They’re encouraging the next generation of lighting designers, too, by working with local resident Kevin McCloud to sponsoring the annual young designers’ competition this Spring at Frome College.

Fiat Lux, 8 Bath Street, Frome, Somerset, BA11 1DH. Tel 01373 473555.
