How about this splendiferous cake for your next birthday?
This is cake guys, but not as we know it. Surreal. Fantastical. Even a hint of the Dark Side. Don’t expect fondant icing or pastel frosting and there’s not a multi-coloured sprinkle in sight.
Helen Bakunowicz swapped yarns and textiles and a successful career in fashion colour forecasting in New York and London, for flour, eggs and sugar in Frome to become The Bakemonger, creator of incredible edible art – and she’s already been noticed by Vogue, the BBC and a certain very well-known Knightsbridge store (my lips are sealed).
Her cake-scapes may look out of this world but they’re not too good to eat. Get ready to drool: think lime courgette, lemon, almond and choc sponges layered with fresh fruit, vanilla bean cream, citrus marmalade, seeds and drizzled with syrup and fruit coulis, then decorated with tempered choc, rice paper, fresh and dried fruit and veg and edible blooms. And she makes them all in her own kitchen (aren’t some people just sickening?).
Birthday or other celebration cakes cost from £70, wedding cakes from around £500 – or you can treat yourself to a bake or a tart for just £4 from her stall in The Frome Independent market (first Sunday of every month April-December).
Go on, try one – you know you want to…
