Over 500 noisy, smelly steam engines; steam-powered fairground organ; two huge fairs and more, over a massive 600 acres: this heritage event has to be seen (and heard) to be believed.  Absolutely spectacular at night.

The Children Act, cinemas around Somerset, Fri 24 Aug

Emma Thompson plays the family court judge who has to decide whether a brilliant teenage boy with leukemia should be forced to have a potentially life-saving blood transfusion against his religious belief as a Jehovah’s Witness. Based on the novel by Ian McEwan. Gripping stuff.

Watchet Live Festival, Watchet, Fri 24 – Sun 26 Aug

For a small seaside town, Watchet’s annual music festival punches well above its weight with a 30-act line up that includes Scouting for Girls, Turin Brakes, Aswad,  Melanie C, The Selector – oh and The Wurzles. Tickets through the website are sold out at the time of writing, some are still available on twickets.  Act fast.

Straight from the Edinburgh Fringe, bonkers Japanese comedians Ketch! and HIRO-PON are said to be a cross between Laurel & Hardy and Madness.

Micheal Morpurgo’s book given the Stephen Spielberg treatment. Open air cinema.
