This weekend

Dirty Dancing, Bristol Hippodrome, Mon 3-Sat 8 July

At a holiday resort with ma and pa in the summer of ’63,  17-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman stumbles across an all night staff dance party. Mesmerised by the raunchy moves  – and raunchy dance instructor Johnny Castle – she’s soon having the time of her life. Steamy dancing; let’s hope the theatre’s air con is working.

NASS, Royal Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet, Thurs 6-Sun 9 July

Skateboarders, BMXers and ravers collide (not literally, hopefully) in this huge action sports music fest.

Samphire Festival, Exmoor, nr Minehead, Fri 7-Sun 9 July

An eclectic live and electronic line-up headlined by Crazy P, The Correspondants and Resonators, street food, giant human snakes and ladders,  films, yoga, immersive theatre – and samphire foraging, of course in this small but award-winning festival named after a salty seaside veg.

Go Wild in the Country, Bruton Art Factory, Bruton, Fri 7 July- Sat 29 July

BAF’s summer show – 70 artists, 150 artworks – opens next Friday at 5pm with a surprise DJ…

Frome Festival, venues around Frome, Fri 7-Sun 16 July

The funky Bollywood Brass Band opens the 17th Frome Festival with an extravaganza of Indian dance, film and food. The fun continues over the week with the likes of  Mock the Week‘s Andy Parsons,  Jeremy Hardy, The Wonderstuff,  Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Germaine Green, Gyles Brandreth, Felicity Lott, Stephanie Cole, Ann Widdicombe and local talent.

Fly 4 Heroes, Henstridge Airfield, nr Templecombe, Sat 8 July

Be a magnificent (wo)man in a flying machine for half an hour.  30 minute flights over the Dorset countryside cost £40, in aid of Help for Heroes: Classic car display too.

The Empty Chair, The Cooper Hall, Frome, Sat 8 July

Two Persons find their world turned upside-down by the mysterious silence of an empty chair. The Troupe Collective developed this intriguing family musical adventure during a residency at The Cooper Hall last year and will be performing it at Snape Maltings in Suffolk and the Sptitfields Music Festival as well as here in Frome.

There and Back Again – An Odessey, the egg, Bath, Sat 8 & Sun 9 July
