This weekend

FRI 13–SUN 15 OCT 2017

Josephsohn/Märkli: a conjunction, Hauser & Wirth, Bruton, until 1 Jan 2018

Have a wander around the gallery’s new show with works by late Swiss sculptor Josephsohn (1920 – 2012) and the architectural drawings of his long-time friend, Swiss architect Peter Märkli (born 1953). Rita Ackermann’s ‘Turning Air Blue’s in a separate exhibition. If this isn’t your cup of tea,  there’s always the very good coffee (and lunch) in the Roth Bar & Grill and a small shop with gorgeous cards and stuff.

Moscow State Circus, Bristol, Weds 4–Sun 15 Oct

The world famous circus sets up the Big Top on Durdham Downs this month. Their latest show,  Gostinitsa, combines the best of the circus art forms – trapeze, tightrope, unicyclists, clowns, you name it – with the Art Deco glitz and glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Read our review.

Britain’s Got Talent, Weston super mare, Fri 13 Oct, Bath, Sat 14 Oct

Have you got what it takes? Find out at one of these open auditions –just turn up. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Bruton Decorative Antiques Fair, Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford, Fri 13–Sun 15 Oct

Dealers from all over the UK come to tempt us with their wares to decorate the home, garden and even your good self. Just in time for Christmas, goody. Click here for a free ticket that might just win you lunch for two at the Roth Bar & Grill.

Two Moors Festival, various venues across Exmoor and Dartmoor, Fri 13–Sat 21 Oct

Described as ‘like going to the Wigmore hall, with better views. And cows’, this annual week-long music festival sees world class artists giving concerts, recitals, talks and workshops in village halls, churches and halls across 12,000 square metres of stunning landscape. Full programme.

Wells Festival of Literature, Bishop’s Palace, Wells, Fri 13–Sat 21 Oct

Books and grub – two of my fave things. The longstanding lit fest hits 25 years, with speakers including Nick Clegg, Andy Hamilton, Sarah Perry, Rowley Leigh and June Sarpong – and special festival menus deals at some of Well’s best eateries, including The Swan and Ensemble.

Howard Hodgkin : India on Paper, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, Sat 14 Oct–Sun 7 Jan 2018

Hodgkin visited India almost every year from 1964 until his death earlier this year, producing a mass of work – gouache paintings, editioned prints and hand-coloured impressions – much  of it on show here.

Grayson Perry: The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever! Arnolfini, Bristol, Weds 27 Sept–Sun 24 Dec

Did you see Channel 4’s programme about Grayson Perry touring the UK searching for inspiration to create his Leave and Remain pots? Well, you can see the pots themselves now. The pots, along with 24 other artworks dealing with masculinity, class, politics, sex, religion, popularity and art, Brexit and ‘Divided Britain’, are all on display in a major exhibition transferring from the Serpentine Gallery. There’s a programme of events to go with.
