National Portrait Gallery

The Long Gallery across the top floor of this splendid Elizabethan house is devoted to an exceptional permanent exhibition of royal portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. The new 2018 addition focuses on the 17th century powerhouse that was Elizabeth of Bohemia. The rest of the house (built by the man who prosecuted Guy Fawkes) is worth a look too – and there’s a shop and cafe.

Bath Comedy Festival, various venues around Bath, Tues 27 March–Sun 15 April

Lost play by Victorian master is world premiered in Bath. Sir Trevor Nunn directs this comedy about love, sexual attraction and independence written by Harley Granville Barker.

Surely one of the best street markets – designer-makers, vintage, food and drink, music – not just in the West Country but the south of England, nay the UK (I’m a fan).

World famous dancer and choreographer Carlos Acosta, who just happens to live in the locale, will be opening this year’s celebrations  – one of the best village fairs in Somerset.

The Cherry Orchard, Bristol Old Vic, until Sat 31 March

A Russian landowner returns to the family estate (including a large cherry orchard) before it’s auctioned off.  This production of Chekhov’s final tragi-comic masterpiece tells the story of a family on the brink of ruin; a country on the verge of a revolution, ‘in the round’.   Read our review.
