Scratch ! 35mm animation workshop, Curzon Cinema, Clevedon, Sun 14 August
Budding animators: learn how to tint, scratch, cut and paste together 35mm film to create individual animations frame by frame, with the resulting animations joined together and screened to parents after the workshop. This is part of the month-long series of events for children and adults called August loves Archives showcasing celluloid film and artefacts from the cinema’s collection. This workshop is for children aged 6-11 years, 2pm, £3. There’s a free editing workshop using a 1950s Steenbeck editing suite (looks like it’s for adults) on Sun 21 August and another animation workshop for kids on Tues 23 August. Pete’s Dragon, cinemas across Somerset, from Fri 12 August
For years Mr Meacham (Robert Redford) has told stories about a fierce dragon living in the woods. His daughter Grace thinks that’s all they are – until she meets a mysterious boy called Pete who lives in the woods with his best friend Elliot, who is – you’ve guessed – a dragon. A warm and wonderful remake of the 1977 Disney musical most people have forgotten. Find out where it’s on near you here.
The Canterbury Tales, Montacute House, nr Yeovil, Sat 13 August
A cast of just five actors take on all 70 parts in every single one of Chaucer’s 24 timeless tales in The Pantaloon’s fast-paced production. Expect puppets, music, magic, mayhem, belly laughs, talking chickens and burnt bottoms (hopefully not yours). I went to see this a few years’ ago and it was excellent.

Little Big Top Circus, The Brewhouse, Taunton, Thurs 11 August
The Muddies were completely absorbed for ages learning some circus skills at the Lowland Games recently so this event, run by Fuse Performance, should be a real winner. The whole family can try their hand at juggling, diabolo, poi (weighted strings), stilts, plate spinning, hula hooping and you can take away your juggling balls or poi to practice at home.

Now watch the professionals: Circus Wonderland, no animals, just sequined circus spectacle and The Popolinis: Mr Popol, a ‘whiteface’ clown, and his partner ‘Kakehole’, a typical ‘auguste’ clown with red nose and big boots (and holders of the Best Circus Comedy Act).

Around the World in Eighty Days, Bishop’s Palace, Wells, Fri 12 August
Racing against the clock, Phileas Fogg and his valet Passepartout travel around the world by any means necessary to see if they can make it back to London in 80 days (about the same time it takes to get through the Stonehenge bottleneck on a Friday evening). This Boxtree production is on at The Bishop’s Palace in Wells on Fri 12 August.

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, Ashton Court, Bristol, Thurs 11- Sun1 14 August
150 colourful hot air balloons from around the world fill the skies over four days in the world’s largest annual balloon get together. You can watch the balloons – the mass ascents at 6am *gulp* on Thurs, Sat and Sun, and evening Night Glows at 9pm on Thurs 11 and Sat 13 are said to be spectacular – or take a ride. There’s a funfair and lots of stalls too.
