There are works from the likes of Paula Rego, Marc Chagall and William Holman Hunt plus major contemporary artists who’ve been influenced by her work as well as photos and personal mementos from her life.  A local link: she went to Bristol University.

This Christmas classic is an encore recording from last week’s live broadcast of the Royal Ballet’s performance at the Royal Opera House, presented by Darcy Bussell.

Stargazing at Wimbleball Lake,  Dulverton, Tues 13 Dec

astronomy-1867616_1280Clear big sky views and no light pollution make Wimbleball Lake in the Exmoor National Park one of the best places to stargaze. The Lake is a Dark Sky Discovery Site and the entire park itself is the first place in Europe to be designated an International Dark Sky Reserve. This week Seb Jay, author of Exmoor Dark Skies, and his telescope will be on hand to explain what’s up there.

Jason Rebello, Cooper Hall, Frome, Sun 11 Dec

The teen prodigy who was one of the forerunners of the modern jazz resurgence in the early 90s and has worked with many of the biggest names in music (including Sting and Jeff Beck), has made seven albums but Held is his first solo piano recording. Hear him play it at Cooper Hall.

Father Christmas, all over Somerset, Sat 10 & Sun 11 Dec

getfileattachment-1Whether you want to track him down or steer well clear, here are some of the places rotund bearded men in red and white suits can be found in Somerset this weekend:  in a grotto at Kilver Court in Shepton Mallet,  arriving by helicopter at the Helicopter Museum in Weston-super-Mare, by train at the Yeovil Railway Centre and the West Somerset Railway in Bishop’s Lydeard, in another grotto at Puxton Park in Hewish nr W-s-M,  at the Ferne Animal Sanctuary, in Chard (they’re putting on a special carol service for pets – so bring Rover if you want), at Taunton’s Museum of Somerset (maybe take the reindeer trail too?) and in his study at Barrington Court (the location for the new BBC1 series Six Wives with Lucy Worsley). Let me know of any good ones that I’ve missed out!
