OK, OK, I know it's early but just getting in quick with some cool and original vintage Christmas gift ideas for grown ups

Yeah I know it’s only September (just) and you’ll hate me for mentioning it but Christmas is only about twelve weeks away (eek). This year I’m going down the vintage route when it comes to gifts for the grown ups. Right, so here’s what I’m thinking…

FOR THE GLAMOROUS SISTER

A swanky vintage French Doran handbag. No crocs were harmed in the making of this 1950s handbag – it’s black leather embossed with a crocodile (or should that be alligator?) skin pattern.  Just add a compact and she’s ready to go. One of a selection from 20th Century Glamour (£175). Oh, they sell vintage compacts too.

FOR THE COOL BRO (OR O.H.)

A Thunderbirds style chair. I can see Scott Tracey, square-jawed pilot of Thunderbird 1 in this bright red number. It tilts, it spins, it’s soooo cool. The chair’s styled for the 50s but was made in the 70s. From Not Wanted on Voyage (£650). Secret confession: I always fancied Scott (come on, you’ve never lusted after a puppet?).

FOR THE BF

Opulent scent bottles make sense on their own or filled with her fave perfume (she’ll have to buy her own, sorry love). These vintage Empoli glass bottles were made in the 1960s in Italy but look bang up to date. From 20th Century Glamour (£85 the pair).

FOR THE ARTY PARENT

…and here’s my mum hanging out the washing. Only joking, she hasn’t got any chickens. Actually, she’ll love this original oil painting called ‘Washing Day’ by Vanessa Brown at the Jerram Gallery (£950).

FOR THE WINE QUAFFING PARENT

For someone who loves the red, white or sparkly stuff, these metre-high, galvinised French grape hods are a bonne idea. Decorated with the names of different wine chateaux, they were used to collect the wine harvest around Avignon back at the turn of the century. They’d make great ice buckets for party fizz too. From Chris Holmes Antiques (£495)

All of the above – and much more – can be found on the stalls of the many dealers at the Bruton Decorative Antiques Fair. From Fri 13–Sun 15 October at the Haynes Motor Museum Sparkford, Somerset BA22 7LH. Entrance is £5 but you can get a FREE ticket here. Bring your ticket along to the Fair to be in with a chance to win lunch with wine for two at the Roth Bar & Grill.

We’ll be stacked to the gunnels at the Haynes Motor Museum 13-15 October with many more ideas for a decorative home and hearth!
