Banging fireworks!

Where to go in Somerset, Bath and Bristol to get the best bangs for your bucks

Fireworks at Forde Abbey, nr Chard

Fantastic Fireworks, Longleat House & Gardens, nr Warminster, Fri 25 & Sat 26 Oct,  Fri 1 & Sat 2 Nov

If the fireworks and classic soundtrack match the setting of this historic house and stunning grounds (and it sounds as if they will) it should be epic.  Not many tickets left.

Light up Lansdown, Bath Racecourse, Bath, Fri 1 Nov

A biggie, with fairground, assorted kids’ entertainment, massive bonfire and a 10-minute firework show accompanied by a Disney soundtrack.  The jacket potato feasts sound good too. Gates opens 5pm, with fireworks at approx 7.45pm.

Downend Round Table Fireworks, Downend, Bristol, Fri 1 Nov

Now in its 48th year, with pulled pork, burgers, candy floss and Great Western Brewing in charge of the bar. This year’s charity is Network Counselling and Training Bristol.  Gates open 5.30pm; children’s display (more visual effects than loud bangs) 6.30pm; main display (some ear cracking whoppers), 8pm.

Fireworks at Forde, Forde Abbey, nr Chard, Sat 2 Nov

Live music from ‘Lost’, pipes and drums (surely the only place in Somerset where this happens),  sweet potatoes, burgers, bangers and deep fried cookie dough and ice cream, Otter Beers and a bonfire procession – and fireworks. Set within a Capability Brown garden with the historic Abbey as a backdrop, this should be spectacular.  Gates open from 5pm; fireworks from 7pm.

Bruton Bonfire Night, Sheephouse Farm, Brewham, Sat 2 Nov

This one comes with live music, food from the fire and mulled cider supplied by the fab Roth Bar & Grill. In aid of local schools and – to declare an interest – one of them’s the Muddies’ school.  Gates open 5pm.

Yeovil Fireworks, Yeovil Showground, Yeovil, Sat 2 Nov

Funfair, live music, grub, bar and a 17-minute firework display. Gates open 5pm; fireworks 8pm.

Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, around Bridgwater, Sat 2 Nov

Not a conventional fireworks display but the squibbing – the simultaneous firing of large fireworks along the road to create a huge trail of fire – is unique. The biggest and best of the famous illuminated Somerset carnivals with samba, marching bands, choirs street performers and those spectacular illuminated floats. Fun starts at 10am, procession at 6pm. See their website for full info, including where to park (essential).

Puxton Park, Hewish, nr Weston-super-Mare, Sat 2 Nov

Got Littlies? This one might be good for you. As well as the fireworks, there are kids’ rides, a hog roast and BBQ and their 3-storey soft playbarn’s open too. Open from 5pm to 9pm, with fireworks at 7pm.

Free event organised by the Rotary Clubs. Gates open 6.30pm. Fireworks, accompanied by music, at 7.30pm.
