Workplace stress hacks

Turns out it’s tricky to escape the gender gap even in our mental health – a survey showed that women are more than 60 percent more likely to suffer from work-related stress than men. Something to do with juggling the house, the kids, the career…?  Try these seven simple suggestions to help reduce your stress at work…

#1 A walk in the park

Any walk will help boost endorphins but one in a park or across a field (we’re in the country, right?), can help create a special sense of well-being that’s almost meditation. Go outside, get some fresh air – but don’t take your mobile. Look around, listen, breathe in and allow your mind to wander but not back to work.

#2 Pop a plant on your desk

NASA scientists found that just three houseplants in a room can greatly improve the air quality by absorbing everyday toxins that can cause headaches and sore throats. It doesn’t stop there, experts at the Royal Horticultural Society say that houseplants also reduce stress, anxiety and fatigue.

#3 Work smarter not harder

Get the most important or difficult tasks out of the way first.  Multi-tasking’s not all it’s cracked up to be: rather than spend an hour switching between three different jobs, spend 20 minutes on each.  Plan what you can ahead of time. Leave air between different tasks. Remember, you don’t have to be superwoman.

#4 Watch your caffeine

You might think that coffee helps you focus but more than four cups a day can increase levels of stress hormones long term.

#5 Connect with your colleagues

Don’t automatically send an email to a co-worker in the next room, go and speak to them.

#6 And breathe…

After a tense meeting or you need to clear your head, spend a few minutes deep breathing:  breath in for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds and breathe out for 5 seconds.

#7 Get enough shut-eye

You might not need eight hours every night but existing on four hours leaves most of us more stressed, unable to concentrate and exhausted. Set a time to go to bed and stick to it (and don’t take your mobile with you).
