Green by name, green by nature
A cut and colour at Salon On The Green, an environmentally-friendly hair salon in the nicest part of Yeovil, and winner of Best Hair Salon in the Muddy Awards 2019
Helen O’Sullivan and her business partner Nici Pickett, who also run Salon on The Square in Beaminster, have transformed a handsome two-storey hamstone building close to the Church on the Green in Yeovil, into a light, modern open-plan space, offering treatments with environmentally-friendly Australian brand Kevin Murphy. The salon only opened last year but it stormed to the top of the charts winning Best Hair Salon in the Muddy Awards 2019. Our Commercial Manager Annie went along to see what all the fuss was about.
To cut and highlight my fine, mid-length blonde hair, dried out and knackered after a summer of sun, swimming and straightening and to cover up the * ahem * silver at the roots.
Clean and contemporary with bright white walls and wooden floors. Kitted out with natural wood fittings and slick black and chrome furniture.
The salon’s set over two floors. Oh look, here’s Helen…
A cool green ceiling accent light and forest wall in the hair washing section add to the relaxing vibe which is completed by the shiatsu massage chairs.
Lavazza coffee from a proper machine. Helen is so green-minded that she even redistributes the used coffee grounds on her garden.
I am notoriously fussy about my colour and trust very few colourists. After many years I have discovered I am a cool blonde (not a warm blonde). I want my hair to look natural, to be broken up and not blocky, with some dark coming through to match my root colour, lighter around the face and no tiger stripes. I am not very good at communicating this. Luckily, Helen is one of those seasoned professionals who can read between the lines. She suggested four colours (two blondes, one natural and one dark) to even up the tone, especially at the back. Once all the foils were in, I had a chance to read some magazines and even better, I was given a wonderful hand massage by Lucy.
THE CUT & STYLE
A while back my hair was over layered by a zealous Frenchman (I’m talking a back of head fringe) and I’m still trying to grow these top layers out. I like a bit of length so we decided to go for an overall tidy up to improve condition, cutting an inch or two from the length, snipping some of those fragile layers to encourage healthy growth and shaping around the face to improve overall shape.
Ethical Australian hair care brand Kevin.Murphy – sulphate, paraben and cruelty-free ‘skin care for the hair ‘ and ammonia-free and highly pigmented colour – which comes in 100% recycled ocean plastic bottles (apparently, the first beauty brand to do so).
Shampoo: Angel Wash for Fine Coloured Hair (entirely vegan) with green tea and lavender essential oils to smooth cuticles for strength, added moisture and volume, rose hip repairs while camelia leaf prevents breakage. Conditioner: Papaya and Pineapple Cleansing Treatment with proteins from humble pea to help strengthen and repair damaged hair; Staying Alive leave-in treatment; Young Again immortelle-infused treatment oil; and Un.Tangled, leave in conditioner/detangler.
Absolutely delighted. The colour is spot on, natural looking, definitely blonde as opposed to silver with texture and depth and the overall condition is much better. It’s much easier to style now it has more shape too.
My hair was styled curly to make a change from my usual straight look and to add a little royal va va voom, Helen used Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair, a flexible texturing hairspray as used by Megan Markle, no less.
I’d highly recommend Salon On The Green to nervous first timers wanting their hair coloured or anyone who’s been having highlights for years and wants to find a safe and trustworthy pair of hands. Loved the hand massage and the shiatsu chair massage and I’m now a Kevin Murphy convert. A genuinely relaxing experience.
