This week

We’ve got theatre (inside and out), festivals (one soley concerned with rum) and somewhere to go wearing an extravagant hat and high heels – take your pick from these things to do in Somerset and beyond…

Looking at Lucian, Ustinov Studio, Bath, Thurs 3 August- Sat 3 Sept

See something before your London mates – there’s a world premiere up in Bath this month. Double Olivier Award winner Henry Goodman stars as Lucian Freud in a fly-on-the-wall (you feel like you’re right there in the studio) drama about the famous portraitist.

Lady in the Van, Theatre Royal, Bath, Thurs 17 August – Sat 2 Sept

Big name Sara Kestleman is the woman living on Alan Bennett’s driveway in this production.

Rum Festival, Cheese & Grain, Frome, Sat 19 August

Next best thing if you’re not holidaying in South America or the Caribbean this summer? Over 40 rums, rum cocktails, Caribbean food and hot spicy music in the centre of Frome.

Ladies Day, Bath Racecourse, Sat 19 August

OTT hats and heels on and get ready to strut your stuff at Ladies Day.  Food, drink, a Best Dressed competition (win £1000) – oh and a spot of horse racing too, including a female jockey only race.

Emperor’s New Clothes, Tyntesfield House, Wraxall, Sat 19 August

Award-winning theatre company Illyria’s production about the vain man tricked by two conmen into capering about naked – on the lawns of this imposing Victorian mansion.

Pride & Prejudice, Dunster Castle, Dunster, Sat 19 August

Elizabeth Bennett Chapterhouse Production

Commemorate 200 years since Jane Austen’s death (or not, if you’re Andrea Leadsom who thinks she’s one of our greatest living authors) with this performance in the spectacular setting of Dunster Castle.

Smoked and Uncut, The Pig near Bath, Sat 19-Sun 20 August

More glamour than grunge, set against the rolling Mendips with views across the Pig at Bath’s deer park, top chef Angela Hartnett’s Italian banquet and a cocktail or two – this isn’t yer average festival.
