This week

Josephsohn/Märkli: a conjunction, Hauser & Wirth, Bruton, until 1 Jan 2018

Have a wander around the gallery’s new show with works by late Swiss sculptor Josephsohn (1920 – 2012) and the architectural drawings of his long-time friend, Swiss architect Peter Märkli (born 1953). Rita Ackermann’s ‘Turning Air Blue’s in a separate exhibition. If this isn’t your cup of tea,  there’s always the very good coffee (and lunch) in the Roth Bar & Grill and a small shop with gorgeous cards and stuff.

Incognito, Merlin Theatre, Frome, Weds 4 Oct

Ryanair cancel your break to Sunny Spain?  Cheer up, Mi Flamenco will be clicking their castanets and tossing their skirts in Frome. Ole!

Moscow State Circus, Bristol, Weds 4–Sun 15 Oct

The world famous circus sets up the Big Top on Durdham Downs this month. Their latest show,  Gostinitsa, combines the best of the circus art forms – trapeze, tightrope, unicyclists, clowns, you name it – with the Art Deco glitz and glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Read our review.

Legally Blonde,  Bristol Hippodrome, Tues 2–Sat 7 Oct

When Elle Woods’ boyfriend Warner dumps her the night before going to Harvard Law School, she decides to get into Harvard too and be the ‘serious’ person her ambitious boyfriend thinks he needs to further his career. By the end of the show, she’s still resolutely blonde, but no longer judged on it *sob*. With Lucie Jones (Eurovision), Rita Simons (EastEnders), Bill Ward (Emmerdale) and Charlie Stubbs (Coronation Street).

Rob Brydon, I am Standing Up, Colston Hall, Bristol, Weds 4 Oct

Ubiquitous comic hits Bristol in his 87-date tour of the UK. Last few tickets remaining (if you miss out, don’t fret, they’ve put on an extra date Sat 4 Nov).

Blade Runner 2049, various venues across Somerset, Thurs 5 Oct

Where’s the biggest cinema screen near you? That’s where you’ll want to see this head-spinningly spectacular sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic. Set 30 year on, Ryan Gosling is LAPD officer K, a replicant tasked with tracking down and eliminating earlier replicants who were manufactured as slaves but turned rogue.  After discovering a long buried secret that could plunge what’s left of the world into chaos, he sets off on a quest to find former blade runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). Can’t wait. Find a cinema near you.

Frogman, the egg, Bath, Sat 7–Weds 11 Oct

Ground-breaking theatre here: the audience wears virtual reality headsets for this supernatural, coming of age thriller set on the Great Barrier Reef. The action shifts from Meera, an adult marine biologist in the present day, back to a time when her frogman father helped look for one of her missing friends.  One of the hit at the Edinburgh Festival. For kids 12+.

Wells Food Festival, various venues around Wells, Sun 8 Oct

Nosh, nibbles, booze, etc to try and to buy from over 150 artisan producers in the Market place, along the Bishop’s Palace Moat, recreation ground and Town Hall. There’s a rolling cocktail bar too.

Somerset Arts Week Festival 2017, various venues across Somerset, until Sun 8 Oct

Malcolm Ashman at Andelli Art

350 artists showcasing their work – much around the theme ‘Prospect’ – in 120 venues as part of the county’s largest festival of visual arts. You’ll find art in some of Somerset’s most stunning gardens, bookshops, scrapyards, tithe barns, pubs … as well as galleries. Cavaliero Finn’s ‘Essence of Home’ in an uninhabited Georgian Manor House (venue 88) caught my eye.   The Colony Room Club Somerset at the Bruton Art Factory returns as the official Festival Club. Plan your arty trail around the county with the Festival programme.
