Summer holiday saviours!

Cool courses, camps and other childcare-masquarading-as-fun options to help ease your way through the Summer

Wahhhh! I’ve left it totally last minute yet again to book the Mudlets into holiday courses and out of my hair. Why, why, why do I always do that? If you’re as disorganised as me, fear not, because I’ve done a last-minute trawl of cool courses, camps and other childcare-masquarading-as-fun options to help ease your way through the Summer. It’s a bit of a scratch list so if you have any suggestions of things you’ve booked kids into or know of, please do add in the comment box below. Knowledge is power people, let’s flex our muscles.

Summer Day Camps, Mill on the Brue, Bruton

Slide down a giant zip wire, jump off a fan descender, make rafts, campfires or feed their animals – your 7-12 year olds will have the time of their life at this idyllic 28-acre activity centre. The Muddies have been a few times now and would happily spend the whole summer here. Their action packed activity days run 8.30am-5.30pm on weekdays Mon 17 July to Fri 25 August, with pirate and army themed days on Wednesdays and Fridays (£58, with lunch). Mornings only for Mini Mobsters aged 5-7 years (£20).

Build a musical, Kilve Court, nr Bridgwater

Bring your acting, singing and dancing skills to produce a showstopper performance from scratch in just 6 days. This residential course for 10-17 year olds runs from Sun 6-Fri 11 August and will knock you back £315. If you’re nearer to Yeovil, there’s a similar sounding Showstopper Course from 31 July to Fri 4 August, 10am-4pm each day at the town’s Octagon Theatre (£135).

Young artists summer school, Hauser & Wirth, Bruton

Drawing, sculpture and experimental (!) printmaking will keep arty types out of mischief for a while. Two day workshops for children between 6-10 years (Tues 25 & Weds 26 July) and 11-16 years (Thurs 27 & Fri 28 July). £50/workshop.

Sports courses at Millfield School, Street & Glastonbury

All sorts of sporty day and half-day courses and longer for kids aged 2-17 years :  tennis, golf, football, hockey, cricket, athletics, badminton, squash, netball – or if you can’t make up your mind, multi-activity sessions too.  Your child doesn’t have to be a future Olympian though he or she will be using the top notch facilities and coaches from one of the best sporting schools in the UK.  Cost from £35/half day; £40 day.

Bristol Old Vic Youth Theatre summer school, Hauser & Wirth, Bruton

In this collaboration with the Bristol Old Vic, thespy kids aged 11–16 year work with professional directors to create an original piece of theatre, taking Rashid Johnson’s exhibition at H&W as their starting point. The summer school runs  weekdays from Mon 14 until Thurs 24 August 10 am–5pm daily, and culminates in a public performance. £140.

Cricket camps, Centre of Excellence, Taunton & other venues

Somerset’s budding (please add a famous cricketing name, my knowledge starts and ends with WG Grace) can hone their batting, bowling, fielding and wicket keeping skills at the county ground on Fri 28 July & Mon 14 August, 9.30am-3.30pm. For 6-10 year olds assorted dates and venues between Mon 23 July & Thurs 3 August; 11-13 year olds, £25/day.

Centre for Young Musicians summer music course, Richard Huish College, nr Taunton

Musical 10-18 year olds can make nice sounds at this week-long course run by with the CYM, which is a division of London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After a week of workshops for bands and orchestras,  creative music technology, singing etc, there will be a concert for you lot. From Mon 7-Fri 11 Aug, 9am-5pm daily. £270.
